ILLITERATE GRAD SUES OVER LACK OF EDUCATION

Kanawha County resident Thomas P. Sturm says his high school handed him a diploma even though he flunked English and science and is illiterate.

Sturm wants the state Supreme Court to revive his lawsuit over the matter, claiming the school board failed its educational mandate.

Lawyer Mike Clifford says Sturm graduated from Sissonville High in 2004, a functional illiterate.

The school board’s lawyer faults Sturm’s parents for not seeking an administrative hearing over the problem as board policy requires.

Board lawyer Charles Bailey questioned whether Sturm is illiterate. He said the 22-year-old can read and write at a third-grade level.

A ruling is expected by the court by the end of the year.
