WINFIELD, W.Va. — The superintendent of Putnam County Schools says he will retire at the end of the school year.

Superintendent Chuck Hatfield made the announcement Monday during the Putnam County Board of Education meeting. He plans to retire June 30.

Hatfield has worked in the district for more than 40 years. He has served as the superintendent since 2004.

After retiring, Hatfield said he plans on staying involved in the community.

The school board is expected to make a hire outside of Putnam County to serve as the new superintendent. They plan to make that announcement at its May 25 meeting.

An interim superintendent will be named if the board does not name a replacement before June 1.
