VALLEY HEAD, W.Va. — Following the apparent suicide last week of a physical education teacher at Tygarts Valley High School, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department continues investigating allegations of sexual misconduct.

In a statement, Sheriff Mark Brady sought the public’s help in connection with the investigation.

“We have the community safety at need and we also want to verify any potential victims so that we may reach out to them and provide them with counseling and with any assistance that they may need,” Brady said.

Reports indicate Charles Swecker, 55, died July 31, one day after resigning from the school and two days after the investigation began.

As state police also investigated Swecker’s death, Tygarts Valley High School principal Steve Wamsley told The Inter-Mountain newspaper that Swecker “had engaged in some inappropriate activity. I’m not aware of anything more than text messages. I am not aware of any contact.”

The principal, in a meeting with teachers, said he discussed the circumstances of why Swecker “had taken his own life” and scheduled counselors for campus visits.

Swecker also served as a science teacher and the high school’s athletics director.
