State board to take up Martirano resignation

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Board of Education meets in regular session Wednesday afternoon and will take up the resignation letter of state School Superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano.

Martirano announced last month that he’ll serve through next June and then take a job closer to his children in Maryland. Martirano’s wife died earlier this year and he’s said he needs to be closer to family.

The state BOE will discuss the resignation behind closed doors in executive session. There was no word if that discussion would extend into the plans on how to search for a new school chief.

Martirano interviewed for a superintendent’s job in Maryland last week but didn’t get it.
